This Sunday saw the Westgates at the Quantock Beast, a fairly demanding 5.7-mile multi terrain race. In previous years the course has been bone dry, runnable in ordinary road shoes, but this year as everyone knows it has been a tad wet. The off-road bits were good and muddy (even more so by the time I got there / LW). Shortly before the start the sun came out giving us perfect racing conditions. With barely an audible “3,2,1,go” the race was off with a furious downhill first mile (ish). At the first gate I scrambled through a hole in the fence in a brilliant manoeuvre to shoot past Martin and a couple of others! However I think Martin was just playing for time and it wasn’t too long before he went back past me, I stayed with him until the 3-mile marker where he changed gear and pulled ahead. The off-road hills weren’t too muddy for the front-runners, but still challenging enough. Small battles emerged amongst various runners; there was a serious quest for first male vet 50 as some well-known faces from previous years were not present. Not too far ahead I could see Martin having a good race with Rod Appleby, which the former won to gain 9th place overall, and in so doing gained first male vet 50. This was fair compensation as last year he had done a much faster time getting 10th place but 3rd MV50 on the day. I was very happy with my new haircut and 14th overall. A heavily strapped Lin C appeared to finish pain-free gaining a gong for 3rd lady. Lesley came home less red than usual, looking strong and suitably mud-splattered, bettering her time from two years ago by about 2 minutes. Star of the show was Harvey, who everyone found adorable.

Bet everyone's wondering who Harvey is. Let's keep them in suspense until we can provide some photographic evidence - I think we took about 400 photographs of him between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon!
Just to say that Martin was also the 3rd runner home in YTRRC's winning men's team - 2 prizes in one race - marvellous!

Good to see some life on the site, I was starting to think the newten posting had sent every one looking for cover.
Would I be right in saying Harvey has already been on a pub run with MNR?

Same number of legs but a different Harvey and much cuter.

Saturday – 07.07.07 – saw the Westgates on the Jurassic Coast for the Charmouth Challenge. Unfortunately it was a workday for me and with increasing work-loads and huge cuts in manpower it looked like a very stressful day. However I managed to negotiate leaving a quarter of my round for someone else to do (we are not obliged to work past our finish time) and things looked a bit more relaxed. We arrived in good time for the race, yet another miracle of bright sunshine amongst all the recent rain, and met several SWRRs and Dave Webb. I decided my target would be to try and stay with Dave; I had beaten him at Charmouth in 2005, yes I did have to check the results twice! We set off at a fair pace on the easy town loop before the first gruelling climb. I was running to my heart rate monitor as a safety valve against going too fast, and Dave gradually pulled away from me. I just love this course with its huge hills, and in the sun we had extensive views. I kept within 30 seconds behind Dave and at mile 6 closed the gap so nobody was between us. However after that it seemed he pressed on and I probably slowed a bit and he finished 72 seconds ahead of me at 64:07. I thought my time was a huge improvement on my only previous visit to Charmouth, but was then reminded that the 2005 course followed a different route and most people's times were much slower that year. But, like for like, my 65:19 beat Lin’s 1st Lady time in 2004 by 8 seconds! Lesley says this is highly insensitive of me bearing in mind Lin wanted to run this year but couldn’t. I say it’s just studying stats and being honest. Afterwards the “famous race director” Pam Gurney told me she had got me on camera in my silly hat at the bottom of the last hill. Can’t wait for the next Roadrunner magazine.

I also had an enjoyable run, although by mile 4 regretted the 7-mile hilly training run on Thursday. Most of the uphills reduced me to walk/running including the concrete track, and I wasn’t much better on the steps where the YTRR passed me. I was also very dispirited to be beaten by the Cheddar running club man right on the line as he had a huge crowd of supporters cheering him on. Richard said a sprint finish was more entertaining for the crowds. However I had a good gallop down the several grassy slopes and the steep path before the finish.

Sunday 15th July saw the Westgates at the Wellington 10 mile road race, 8th in the Somerset series. Heavy rain all night and morning meant there was no chance of sunstroke casualties being rushed off to Musgrove Park Hospital as in previous years. Things started on an inauspicious note. Someone asked where were the toilets to and the answer was follow the smell! There seemed to be no water for flushing and human waste was piled high! I tried to find anyone in charge but only found the motorcycle outriders and like they were really interested. Some kind lady offered to find the caretaker – lucky him – hope he had a shovel. Anyway after picking up Lin and Martin after their extreme ultra marathon on Saturday I suppose we should be used to a rank smell! (Sorry!!!).
What can you say about Wellington Ten? A road race through town onto undulating lanes and back into town. At 5 miles I was 35:12 and after a strong 9th and 10th mile managed to finish in 69:36, my best Wellington in five attempts, so quite satisfied. It will be interesting to see the results as there was a contingent from Bitton and overall it seemed a large entry. Starting ten minutes later was an inaugural 10K race. Great to see extra runners encouraged out and I’m sure it swelled the organiser’s coffers, but probably diluted any semblance of efficiency, info etc. regarding early results.
Would much rather have been at Haytor.

Lesley said: It was my first Wellington 10 and for undulating read hilly. No one believed me when I said it would be wet this year. I finished in just over 85 minutes. The course was well marshalled – a big thank you to all those who helped.

It’s a rare thing to agree with Richard but I would also rather have been at Haytor.

Thank you so much for comparing our (slight) post race odour with a smelly toilet...............
MOB coast race report to follow in the next few days when the horror has receded slightly.
